Grissom AFB, or Grissom Air Reserve Base, is a joint civil airport and military base with the Grissom Aeroplex. Grissom AFB was named after Virgil I. Grissom, who died in the Apollo I fire at Cape Canaveral in 1967. Today, Grissom Air Force Base houses Air Force trainees, as well as members of the U.S. Army Reserve and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. There are several organizations located at Grissom AFB, including the Civil Air Patrol and TransAm. The base is a strong community of people who can enjoy what they do in a lovely place.
Moving to Grissom AFB
If you're planning to move to Grissom AFB, you should use a lot of time to conduct your search for home rentals. People want to live near the base, and it's not an easy place to just stumble upon your dream home. You can find wonderful apartments for rent in Grissom AFB, though, so don't give up after just a few days!
One thing that can help is preparing your rental application ahead of time. Wonder what you'll need for a leasing application? You'll need to prove your financial worthiness, so bring things like bank statements, tax returns, pay stubs, proof of income, a letter of employment and more. Want to officially secure your apt for rent? Then be ready to put down a deposit! Deposits for house rentals can be as much as three times the monthly rent, so be sure to ask before you go. You'll want to have the right amount saved up in your account.
Neighborhoods in Grissom AFB
Another important step in a moving process, even to an AFB, is finding the right neighborhood. Doing a little research will ensure that you're living in a place you love, and it can also shave time off your housing search.
Southern Grissom AFB: The southern portion of the AFB is dominated by a runway. If you don't mind noise, consider living in the residential streets near the runway. It's not the most quiet area, but there are places to live there.
Northern AFB: The northern part of the base is the nicest of residential areas if you prefer less plane noise. There are some cool things to do in this part of town, like visiting the Grissom Air Museum and an inn on the property.
Living in Grissom AFB
The Grissom AFB is pretty much focused on the military, but if you love planes and are into what different groups within the military do, you'll love living here. You can learn a lot about the Air Force at the Grissom Air Museum on the property, and you can chat over a meal at nearby Dutch Cafe.. If you get bored on the base, there's plenty to do nearby. Just hop in your car (you'll need one!) and head straight south to Indianapolis.
