Now home to approximately 9,000 residents, Mount Washington was established in 1822 as Mount Vernon - named for George Washington's famous Virginia residence. However, the town could not retain the name because another nearby town also used the moniker. Once the spot where two stagecoach routes met, Mount Washington was called the "Cross Roads" in the early 19th century. During that time, the town held several hundred people with the population tapering off from 700, when the town was first settled in 1822, to a low population of 340 in 1870.
