Just off of Interstate 44 among limestone bluffs is the city of Eureka. Founded in 1858 along the Pacific Railroad route, Eureka is in the southwestern corner of St. Louis County and is home to over 10,000 citizens and covers an area of 10.54 square miles. Though only a stone's throw from the city of St. Louis, the town retains its small-town atmosphere and quaint charm. Couple these qualities with award-winning schools, a low crime rate and affordable housing and you, too, just might be saying "Eureka! I found it!"
Both of Eureka's upstanding neighborhoods have crime rates much lower than the national average. Also, there aren't many spaces available to rent due to high demand, so if you're thinking about this spot, you'll need to plan well in advance of your move. Your new landlord might require a credit check. Make sure you've got all your paperwork in order ahead of time, and be prepared to pay a security deposit.
Are you considering Eureka for your next apartment? There are only two neighborhoods to choose from, and it might be a tough choice.
City Center: The City Center neighborhood is located south of Interstate 44. This spot is comprised of spacious homes and high-rises as well as apartment complexes where renters can settle down. Month-to-month, you can expect to pay a little more for apartment rent in this neighborhood.
Camp Wyman: Camp Wyman, Eureka's second neighborhood, is north of 44 and a good place to hunt for town homes. Formerly the location of the St. Louis Industrial Children's Farm, it is now the location of Eureka's award-winning public schools.
So, you're moving to Eureka. Great choice, particularly if you plan to commute to work. Most of the city's population travels by car, and the website WalkScore.com rates Eureka as a 58: In other words, you can accomplish some tasks on foot or by bicycle, but the majority of the time you'll need to go in the car. If you love being outside, this might not sound appealing, but the good news is that Eureka is equipped with miles and miles of hiking trails that connect with nearby Route 66 State Park. If that doesn't sound exciting to you, Six Flags St. Louis isn't far away.
You'll find art galleries and specialty shops in Old Town, located across Central Avenue. Fun-filled festivals happen several different times throughout the year in Eureka. Be sure to check out Eureka Days in September for a 5K run, fireworks, carnival rides, a parade and a beer garden. If you're in a Christmas spirit, you should check out the "It's a Wonderful Life" holiday celebration in late November. On hot summer days, you can take a dip in the municipal pool or enjoy an afternoon in one of Eureka's beautiful parks. The Timbers of Eureka, the city's recreation center, will be a go-to location no matter the weather, as it's equipped with a fitness room, gymnasium, and meeting rooms. If you just can't decide, or if you want a little change of pace from your rural setting, hop on I-44 and spend some time in nearby St. Louis.
Safe, affordable, convenient and fun galore. You've found it in Eureka.
