Dayton, New Jersey, is a census-designated place, or CDP, located in South Brunswick Township in central New Jersey. The community has a few more than 7,000 residents calling it home, and encompasses just over two square miles. It was originally known as The Cross Roads, and one claim to fame that the CDP has is that George Washington and his troops traveled through on his way to the Battle of Monmouth. In 1866, The Cross Roads had its name changed to Dayton, after William L. Dayton, an attorney for the Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad.

The CDP itself is fairly walkable, but you will probably still need a car. The roads in Dayton are curvy and pleasant to walk on, but you may live far from amenities such as shopping, restaurants and entertainment.

Life in Dayton

Life can be pretty idyllic in a small suburban community like Dayton. There are quite a few self-contained cul de sacs, so you will enjoy getting to know your immediate neighbors in various little communities scattered around the town. In Dayton itself, you'll find a few places to do your shopping and other errands, such as Stop & Shop, Wawa and a good handful of banks and pharmacies. You can grab lunch at China Star NJ or Giuseppe's Pizzeria, and you'll find a nice variety of other types of world cuisines, as well. Once you indulge, you can run off your calories in your neighborhood, or you could head over to Pigeon Swamp State Park or Forest and Reichler Park.

If you're wanting to take a trip out of town, you can catch a sports game or spend the day hiking, biking or horseback riding at Herrontown Woods Arboretum in nearby Princeton. Want to see a show? Head over to New Brunswick and check out State Theater or the George Street Playhouse.

When you live in Dayton, you'll be conveniently located along Route 130. This also gives you access to Interstate 95, also known as the New Jersey Turnpike, which will make it easy for you to make it to southern New Jersey or even New York City without much of a hassle. The Pike will also take you to the Garden State Parkway, which also opens up easy travel possibilities. If you're more of a jet-setter, the Trenton Airport is only about 20 miles away, and Newark Airport is 35 miles away, so you can shop for the best airline prices at either of those major airports.
