First off, the community values education. This might take its roots from way back in 1922 when The Wallace's, a local couple, started up a little operation on Eastview Avenue known as "Reader's Digest." This American publishing classic still uses a Pleasantville address and the town is proud of this literary heritage. Pleasantville has been home to quite a few literary types, including Dashiell Hammett, Dave Barry and NPR host Will Shortz.

Other notable facts about Pleasantville are that it played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War and was a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Ever hear of a guy named Benedict Arnold? Well this traitor used a British spy, not a very good one, who got lost in Pleasantville near the corner of Bedford Road and Choate Lane. The Americans captured him and some say this led to the American victory. Well, maybe there were no street signs back then.

Neighborhoods of Pleasantville

The village of Pleasantville can be broken up into two main areas. The Old Village around Bedford Road and Broadway was the original town center, but when the train station was built in 1846 at Bedford Road and Wheeler Avenue, the commercial center shifted to this part of town. In both areas of the village you will find fine examples of Colonial, Victorian and Tudor homes, some broken up into apartments.

Village Center: Living around the village center will put you within easy distance to the major highways, like the Taconic Parkway. If you plan to travel, this is a big consideration. The center has some great eats, too, like Frank and Joe's Deli and Sinapi's Bakery.

Old Village: The Old Village is bit more quiet than the Village Center. Here you will have a bit of a drive to get over to the Taconic Parkway, but nothing too terrible. There is one small condo complex here called Foxwoods, where you might find a one bedroom condo for rent. There is a quaint vibe here though and you'll likely start frequenting Michael's Tavern and the Old Village Pantry.

Living in Pleasantville

Pleasantville, though small, provides everything you need to live well. The grocery store, Shop Rite, is toward the southern end of the village. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants like the Pleasantville Diner, along with opportunities for arts and recreation with Pace University and the Pleasantville Tennis Club.

Transportation is not a problem with easy access to the Taconic Parkway on the west of town. Here you will be only 15 minutes to the Tappan Zee Bridge, about an hour to Manhattan, and only 20 minutes to White Plains, where you can catch the train and be in Grand Central Station in 30 minutes.

But most residents of Pleasantville don't feel the need to head into the city very often. There is plenty to do locally. If you're craving ethnic food, there are options like Bollywood Bistro and Hanada Sushi.

Because of the presence of Pace University, residents of Pleasantville enjoy stellar cultural events. The Jacob Burns Film Center is renowned as an independent cinema screening documentaries and world-class films. Often, respected filmmakers and actors will present their films and provide opportunities for discussion with the audience. Residents have been able to have an in-depth look at important issues with such notables as Oliver Stone, Stephen King and Woody Allen.

The town has a unique, all volunteer, organization called the Dads Club of Pleasantville. This group organizes and runs recreational and competitive sports programs for all the youth in the village.
