Ashtabula is northern Ohio port city that has recently fallen on some hard times. Like many other towns in Rust Belt Ohio, you’ll be hearing a lot about Ashtabula’s decline as you prepare for your move. Don’t worry, though, it might be rough around the edges, but there’s sure to be something in there that suit you and yours. Let’s take a look at some apartments for rent and find you a nice place to live.
Ashtabula is located on Lake Erie, about 60 miles up shore from Cleveland. With an economy based largely in shipping, railroad and manufacturing, Ashtabula’s population has steadily declined with industry and the economy since the 1950s to a 2000 low of a little over 20,000 residents.
Yikes! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Let’s stop focusing on the negative and emphasize the positive! There’s got to be something good about Ashtabula, right?
As a city that’s experienced recent decline, Ashtabula has tons of cheap apartments available. Also, the countryside surrounding the city is quite beautiful, and largely free of the somewhat high crime rates around the city. Like any smaller town with a bad rep, Ashtabula is what you make of it, so let’s take a look at some neighborhoods.
Around the city center, as well just north and east, there are a number of apartment rentals that offer everything from studio apartments to three bedrooms. While the neighborhoods where these places are located may not be the best, a couple of these developments have decent reputations. If you’re settling around Ashtabula’s city center, be sure that your new complex has decent security. Two bedrooms in this area generally range from $450 to $650.
To the far west of the city center, adjacent to the revitalized community of Geneva-On-The-Lake, you’ll find a great, safe neighborhood with some desirable apartments available for rent. Western Ashtabula tends to transition from suburban feeling to rural pretty quickly. The southern portions of this neighborhood have a couple well-regarded apartment complexes, as well as occasional rental homes. Two bedrooms in this area range from $500 to $700.
East of the city center you’ll also find safer and more settled neighborhoods. While there isn’t much development in terms of apartment rentals in this area, there are rental homes on quiet, family-friendly streets. Prices for two bedrooms here are comparable to rentals in the western portion of town.
One good thing about moving to a declining city is that Ashtabula has a renter’s market. With a dearth of qualified renters, you should be able to negotiate short-term leases with ease. Additionally, about half of Ashtabula’s apartment rentals are pet friendly, so if you’re relocating with a four-legged friend, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a warm, welcoming home for both Fido and Fluffy.
Welcome to Ashtabula. Stay safe and think positive!
