It's hard to believe that there is a town in the US that doesn't have a Wal-Mart, but I guess it's true. Blanchard doesn't have one and they don't want one -- and that goes for McDonald's too. This town has a flowery history steeped in bankruptcy, broken promises, empty railroads and debt. Perhaps this is why there isn't a Wal-Mart. However, Blanchard has shaken away from it's bill dodgy past and built up the city quite nicely. There are parks, apartment complexes, homes, and lots of natural ponds and streams.
Hopefully you read this section before taking me up on the second option listed above, because you sure can't pay your deposit in casino tokens.
Finding an apartment to rent in Blanchard is relatively easy, but there isn't a lot of vacancies up this way, so finding a place in the first place will prove a little difficult. You have to call ahead of time to view vacancies since driving around endlessly isn't an option (especially if you drive a gas guzzler). There really isn't a perfect time to visit an apartment complex here, although traditionally the better season to look is around the Spring or Fall when people are more likely to move.
If you do find a few apartment complexes, make sure you bring the following:
Your own transportation (there is no public transport here).
At least half of the rent as a deposit.
Proof of identification (including your social security card).
Reference contact details and letters (personal and business).
Lease or rent statements.
Bank statements.
Make sure you bring all original documents and no copies.
While it is true that there isn't a whole lot to do here, it is a pretty nice place to visit and to live if you're looking to move. Most of the locals here enjoy hanging out at one of over a dozen local ponds and creeks with Walnut Creek being the most popular. Surprisingly enough, these little bodies of water are teaming with yummy critters like small crabs, bass and trout. If you're a catfish person, you might find better luck in a mud pond or creek outside of the area. They taste delicious, but they smell horrible, so the locals kicked them all out and made them pack up their mud-based homes too. So yea, that happened.
Anyway, if you're still feeling the pull to come and take a look around, here are some of the other things you can get up to:
Hop on the 9
I did warn you that there isn't much to do here, so the first thing on the list here is actually hopping on the freeway to 'get the hell outta' dodge.' But don't look at this as an escape, but rather a path to fun. The 9 freeway (going east) reveals some pretty fun things to do. One of those activities happens to be shopping. In nearby Norman, there are a bunch of malls and retail shops -- and here is where you'll find Wal-Mart (so you can mark that off your list). Other stores you'll spot in the area are Big Lots, Ross Dress for Less, Target, Kohl's and Dillard's.
Blow Big Bucks
Feel like trying your luck? Whether you do or not, there's a Casino about 15 minutes outside of Blanchard called Riverwind Casino. This casino is located off of the 9 Freeway going toward Norman. And don't even think about getting away by driving up north, you're just going to run into more casinos. Thinking of driving west? Casinos. You just can't get away. If you should give into the tempting allure of the flashing slots, take a trip to Newcastle and visit Newcastle Casino or just south to Goldsby Gaming Center in Norman.
