There are two main neighborhoods in this community. Treelined streets and corner playgrounds are the norm and commutes are short just under 15 minutes. Most people drive to work in this community, although the Lower Anthracite Transportation System runs frequent bus routes.

Mount Carmel Borough Center: Urban in density, this area of small to medium townhomes and single family homes is both historic and primarily owner occupied. If you look carefully for rentals, you can find a range of properties, some built in the 19th and early 20th century and others constructed primarily between 1970 and 1999.

W 5th St / S Poplar St.: Also urban in density, this section of Mount Carmel includes a stretch of pretty Shamokin Creek. Townhomes, apartments and single family homes appeal to a mix of owners and renters, with some homes historic in nature, and others constructed mostly between 1940 and 1969.
