Harrison City was originally a town that developed out of a ferry crossing established by James Vann. This was all the way back before the 1840s, and ever since then Harrison City has developed a great heritage, the evidence of which is still present today.
Harrison City has a population of a little over 7,000 residents. It has the kind of homey, small-town vibe city dwellers often crave, but make no mistake: this isn't an ordinary small town. Harrison has all the amenities you'll need!
Moving to Harrison
Moving into Harrison isn't as hard of a process as it may seem to be at first. The fact that the city is small makes housing an easier choice since you won't have to worry so much about living close by to the stores-there's almost always something within walking (or driving) distance. Instead, you can focus on finding your ideal rental property, safe in the knowledge that most everything you need is close at hand.
The other thing that you may want to consider while moving into Harrison is that many of the houses are slightly older houses. This isn't necessarily a bad thing-in fact, many homeowners and renters prefer the charm of older residences-but it does mean you should take extra precautions when setting forth on your house-hunting adventure. Make sure you have thoroughly checked a house before you decide to purchase it or rent it. If you have any questions about a property, enlist the help of a professional to make sure everything is up to snuff.
Renting in Harrison
Renting in Harrison can be difficult if you have something specific in mind. This is because the city is a smaller one and, as you might guess, the city doesn't have quite the same rental-property selection that a huge city might offer. This doesn't mean that you won't find anything-no need to throw in the towel yet! To the contrary, Harrison has a wide variety of rental properties for your perusal.
In order to rent an apartment or a home you will need the same things that you would need in order to purchase one. This includes a deposit as well as proof of income. Having good credit can save you a lot of money. If you have good credit, your landlord may offer you a lower rate since they feel like they can trust you, financially speaking.
To make the most of your rental-property search, it pays to get a head start. Though you might get lucky and find your dream home in a matter of weeks, why tempt fate? Allocate at least four weeks (six, if you can spare them) to search for a 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom apartment.
Trying to plan your move? Consider fall and spring your best bets. The summers here can be quite hot, and unless you've enlisted professional movers to schlep all your heavy boxes and Great Aunt Mary's player piano, you won't want to relocate when the mercury's rising.
Neighborhoods in Harrison
Harrison is a small city; as such the entire city is considered one giant neighborhood. The city has one major road (Highway 58) running through it, making long-distance travel a breeze. In addition, it's bordered by the lovely Harrison Bay. No, you won't have fresh lobster in the summertime, but the Chattanooga Yacht Club isn't too far away, so don't be too quick to throw out your deck shoes.
When you do decide to explore the city, make sure you bring your car (or rent one): The city has a walk score of 18. This isn't bad news, per se, but it does mean you'll need a car to run most errands-that, or gear up for some hefty urban hikes.
Living in Harrison
Living in Harrison is a comfortable experience, full of small-town charm and beautiful scenery. If you work in the area, you'll likely have a quick commute, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy everything the area has to offer.
Outdoor enthusiasts love Harrison, and for good reason: Harrison Bay State Park is located in the city itself. At the State Park, you can enjoy primitive camping, some hiking, and wildlife watching. Bird watchers, in particular, love visiting the park. If you've had enough of the true outdoor experience, head on over to the Marina Cafe, where you can enjoy a meal and a lovely view-and, of course, modern comforts like tables and chairs.
Shopaholics, take note: Hamilton Place mall will draw your attention and may drain your pocketbooks, if you're not careful. Located in nearby Chattanooga, this shopping center has everything you need (and then some). JCPenney is your best bet here for housewares and other staples, but the mall has plenty of smaller chains (Gap, Banana Republic, and the like) too. Hungry? Hit up the food court. When you tire of shopping, catch the latest blockbuster at the theater here.
Harrison's restaurant selection is diverse, which means you'll never get bored or go hungry (and thank goodness!). If you're into chains, you're in luck: Papa John's has a location here, and as far as we know, they still include pepperoncini and garlic sauce with each pie they deliver. If you're into independent eateries, Harrison also has you covered. JCs Family BBQ dishes up ribs, baked beans, pulled pork, and the like; locals enjoy the sauces, and the service is reputed to be top-notch. JCs isn't the only barbecue game in town, though: Sweeneys Pit Bar-B-Q serves-wait for it-baked potatoes stuffed with pulled pork (or other meats of your choice). Savvy diners know to wear elastic-waist pants when visiting Sweeneys! For waterside dining, give the Dockside Cafe a try. Serving grouper, mac n' cheese, fried pickles, and more, Dockside is a great place to enjoy a relaxing meal and get a great view of the water.
Feeling lethargic after all those fried pickles and ribs? You'll need to head out of town to hit the nearest gym, but the good news is there are a few options nearby. The Rush Fitness Center is located in nearby Hixson; it has plenty of equipment and clean locker rooms. Complete Training, also in Hixson, offers personal training services.
