The word is out on Oakland. Voted one of ten best places to live in Tennessee by Movoto Real Estate in 2013, this small town has seen a huge increase in building permits and a whopping population growth rate of over 400 percent.
With that much of a growth rate, you would think that Oakland is a major destination resort town. But that's quite the contrary. Oakland is a typical small town located in West Tennessee, some 28 miles east of Memphis, along Highway 64. So what's the attraction? If you poll the 6,623 residents who live there, the response might be the town provides a quiet community with convenient access to places to eat, shop and play. In other words, residents want to distance themselves from city life, but stay close enough for an occasional trip into the big city for a larger entertainment and nightlife venue. Finding an apartment in Oakland that accepts your pet may not be easy, but it’s very possible. Keep in mind, most of the time you’ll have to pay a premium for bringing your dog along in your new apartment. Some apartments require you to pay monthly pet rent, others will ask for a non-refundable pet fee or a refundable pet deposit.
While landlords and property management companies have varying pet policies, most of them limit the number of dogs you can bring to your apartment and include breed and weight restrictions.
If your pet falls under some of the restrictions outlined in the pet policy, it’s still worth asking the landlord if they can make an exception for your dog. Preparing a pet resume ahead of time could help you build the case for your furry friend. Make sure to include information on behavioral training your dog went through over the years and proof of vaccinations. If you can, include references from your former landlord and/or neighbors.
