"'Well, that was a Hurricane,' exclaimed Snow. 'We'll name this the Hurricane Hill.'" -- Erastus Snow
A desert town named Hurricane? Will you be pelted by rain, hail, and wind? Fear not -- despite its name, Hurricane has never seen a powerful storm like Sandy or Katrina. Barring a dramatic change in weather patterns, it never will. The name comes from an off-the-cuff remark made by Erastus Snow in the mid-1800s. As his buggy traveled through the area, a sudden gust blew the top of the carriage right off, startling Snow and his passengers. He decided then and there that despite the desert climate, Hurricane deserved an unusual title. Want to fit in right away? Don't pronounce "Hurricane" like the storm. Instead, use the British pronunciation "hurr-ahhh-kun," and you will sound just like a local. View Hurricane City Guide
