Although the movie "The Godfather of Green Bay" is set in Wisconsin's capital, it was actually filmed in another small town in the state Marinette. In the film, an L.A. film director takes a look at small-town life, and there could be no better setting for this expose, even if the city is posing as Green Bay!

The two towns are fairly close, although Marinette is further north and is located directly on Lake Michigan. That's not the only body of water in the area, though. Marinette is also situated at the mouth of the Menominee River. In fact, Michigan is just across the border, and Marinette falls into a statistical group that includes the city of Menominee, Michigan! With a population of just over 10,000 people, Marinette is smaller than Green Bay and other notable cities in Wisconsin. However, the city's location on Lake Michigan makes it one of the country's inland seaports.
Moving to Marinette
Marinette offers a lower cost of living than Wisconsin as a whole. However, be prepared for a weighty heating bill during the winter months as temperatures drop well below freezing. It's great if you're into winter sports, but being so near to Lake Michigan does drop temperatures.
Landlords might prevent you from moving between December and February for legal reasons, and this is sound advice. Renters should expect to pay their first month's rent and security deposit upon moving in. Additional pet deposits may be required if you come with furry ones. Many rental houses in Marinette offer month-to-month contracts, and you can find some cool studio apartments for rent that were once warehouses or other businesses in this city on the lake. If you're lucky enough, you might even get a home on the lake.
Neighborhoods in Marinette All of the neighborhoods in Marinette have a relatively low crime rate, although there aren't specific names for each neighborhood. The older neighborhoods in Marinette are right off of the lake; you'll find classic architecture and charming designs here. However, this doesn't mean that the city doesn't offer updated apartments for rent in Marinette and modern amenities.
Because Marinette is so close to cities such as Green Bay, many residents find themselves taking the short commute between there and Marinette. Green Bay is larger than Marinette, so you'll have more options when it comes to shopping, eating and entertainment. Others choose to commute to Menominee, Michigan, which is just across the river and is a little newer.
Life in MarinetteLike many locations in Wisconsin, Marinette provides the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, swimming, ice fishing or boating with Menominee River right there. Hunting, sledding, hiking and biking are also activities that are wildly popular in the area. Marinette isn't quite the tourist hot spot, so you won't have to stop to give directions, either! When not enjoying their free time, residents of Marinette work industry and manual labor jobs. Fishing might pay the rent as well as providing sport. If you love a terrifying thunderstorm, you'll scare the wits out of yourself when you experience your first storm in proximity to the Great Lakes. You'll have to see, feel and hear it to believe it!
